Harl Sizer

Herbert Harl Sizer, Age 94 Harl was born July 21, 1914 in Tacoma to Eber Rockwell Sizer and Minnie Maybelle (Campbell) Sizer. He was baptized at Lincoln Park Christian Church in 1919. Harl had two older brothers, Edgar Rockwell and John Allen, two older sisters, Fern Margarite and Alice Dora, one younger sister Betty Jane, two younger brothers, Neil Ralph, and Robert Dale. In 1920, Harl attended Whitman Grade School, then Stewart Junior High, where he played soccer and basketball, and Lincoln High School, where he played tennis and basketball. While at Lincoln, he was a shop tool room attendant alongside his father, who taught there. Harl married Elaine Georgia Petropulos July 9, 1938 at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion. Daughter Linda Marie was born in 1942. Harl had two grandchildren, Shelby Lynn, and Brian Joseph. He also had four great grandchildren, Tyler and Alex Mayor, and Caiden and Carli Cockrell. Harl was an extremely active and capable man. He served in the National Guard from 1932-41. He was a Lieutenant in the Coast Artillery from 1941-43. Education included: 1956 - Boat Navigation-UPS Tacoma, 1960 - Insurance courses-Seattle University, 1962 - Advanced Insurance Course-Sacramento State College, 1960-64 - Completed and taught various insurance courses. In Harl's younger years, he owned the 23rd Street Garage from 1938-45. His next profession was as an insurance adjuster, branch manager, and regional manager for General Adjustment Bureau, from 1945-65. From 1965-85, Harl owned Sizer-Dennett Adjusters with his brother-in-law and good friend George Dennett. Harl's affiliations included: 1950 - Scottish Rite Graduation Class, Scottish Rite Masons 32nd Degree Class President, 1951 - Afifi Shrine, 1954 - Fircrest Golf Club, 1958 - Browns Point Community Club (president), 1958 - Wauna Dance club, 1959 - Tacoma Claims Association (president), 1966 Blue Goose Lodge - Seattle, Tacoma Elks 174 - Old Timer - 69 year member, other golf club memberships included Oakbrook, Fair Oaks - Sacramento, and Lake Oswego. Harl was an avid and talented left-handed golfer. He was an excellent dancer as well. Golf and dancing were such a big part of his life that he spent summers in Washington, and winters as a snowbird in Indio, California pursuing the sun and his favorite hobbies. He had many good friends in Indio and cherished his time there. Harl's church affiliations included: 1938 - Holy Communion Episcopal, 1954 - Charter member - St. Matthews Episcopal, 1965 - St. Mary's Episcopal (Vestry member). Harl was a very handy and talented man. He loved to spend time restoring cars, boats, and travel trailers. There wasn't anything that he couldn't fix! Harl was preceded in death by Elaine, and his second wife Beula. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his daughter Linda (Ed) Busch, his grandchildren Shelby (Rod) Mayor, Brian (Brandi) Cockrell, and great grandchildren Tyler and Alex Mayor, and Caiden and Carli Cockrell. Harl was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Family and friends were very important to him. We would like to invite family and friends to bring a story or special memory to share at a celebration of his life, to be held Sunday, September 14 at 2pm., Gold Creek Condominium Clubhouse, 3016 N. Narrows Drive, Tacoma. He will be greatly missed.
